Midterm papers must be [4] pages, double-spaced, 12 point font with one inch margins and require an introduction, body and conclusion.  Put your name, class and plan of Chicago chapter near the top. Midterms will be a formal write up of your journals focusing on a specific aspect of the Plan of Chicago.  Midterms do not require a formal reference list, but any reference to a fact must be cited in text using the Harvard System.  The midterm will be considered a rough draft of your thoughts for the final paper.

5 things that will give you an A on your midterm:

Start with the chapter(s) you were assigned for the Plan of Chicago.  Re-read the chapter.

Then reflect on what are some ways that the Plan of Chicago is trying to create a better quality of life for Chicagoans?  What are some ways the Plan is trying to influence human behavior?  How does the Plan of Chicago wield architecture and design to influence behavior? Discuss these questions in your paper.  If you don’t see clear connections, then discuss other themes within that chapter.  Your paper must link to:

The readings (You’ve done the Recording and Reflecting, this is where the Revising part comes in).  I am looking for your thoughts on the substance of the Plan and that you are tying together the readings –the Carl Smith and the Plan readings and other links on D2L together with the chapter of the Plan you were assigned.

The lectures (this is a good time to take another look at the PowerPoints on D2L)

The walking tours and guest lectures. (Use your reactions and reflections from our tours to support your point)

Your paper must have a beginning, middle and end.  I am looking for logic of organization and readability.  This is a short paper.   You should be writing, then rewrite and tighten your arguments and your points. You must support your arguments with items from the readings, lectures, and tours.  There is no room for flowery prose that goes on and on…

Writing style, spelling, organization, grammar-double check everything, please read it over before turning it in.

So for example if your chapter is about water issues, discuss themes you see that arise in the readings, lectures and walking tours about water.
